Hawaiian Dream Temple
A two-bedroom bamboo villa in upcountry Haiku, and the roomiest jungle stay on this list: about 1,000 square feet indoors plus another 800 across three covered lanais, with each bedroom opening onto its own deck. The bathroom has a deep jacuzzi tub built for two, there's a full kitchen, and the tropical gardens come with a pool and hot tub. It's a licensed, permitted rental (the permit number is right in the listing title), which matters on Maui where plenty of jungle rentals operate in a gray zone. Haiku is a working town in the green belt above the north shore — expect passing rain, mud on your shoes, and fruit stands. Ho'okipa Beach and its surfers and turtles are 15 minutes down the hill, Paia is just past that, and you're positioned well for both the Road to Hana and a pre-dawn Haleakala sunrise run. Sleeps four across the two bedrooms.
Reaching Haiku and what the cottage has
The cottage is in Haiku-Pauwela on Maui's north shore. Kahului's airport (OGG) is about 13 km away in a straight line; the host puts it at a 30-minute drive and says a rental car is a must. The entrance is private and gated, with a driveway and parking at the cottage. The host has planted the land with tropical flowers and palms over more than 13 years, under old eucalyptus trees. Our record puts Ho'okipa Beach 15 minutes away.
Airbnb lists two bedrooms, two beds and one bathroom, for up to six guests; we had listed four before this check. There is a pool, a private hot tub open all year, a bathtub, a kitchen with a double oven, a yoga mat and a travel cot kept at the house. Check-in is self-service from 3 pm and checkout is by 10 am. No pets, no parties and no smoking.
