The Rainforest Ecolodge has a backstory you can see from your terrace: the chalets are built partly from repurposed shipping containers, set on former tea land right on the southwest fringe of UNESCO's Sinharaja. It sounds gimmicky and isn't — each unit gets a private terrace with panoramic views out over forest and old tea, and the containers vanish into the design once you're inside. This was a pioneering eco-lodge by Sri Lankan standards, and it's run by Aitken Spence Hotels, so it's a step up in polish from the rougher jungle camps. The real draw is the birding: Sinharaja's endemics are the prize, and the guided rainforest walks put you among them. It's not budget, but you're paying for a UNESCO doorstep. Verdict: the comfortable way to do Sinharaja, with the birds and the tea views as the dividend.
