Back of Beyond at Dehigaha Ela is the low-impact retreat between Sigiriya and Dambulla, spread over about seven acres where the Kiri Oya and Dehigaha Ela streams meet. The treehouse here is the genuine article: sleeping space high in a Kon tree with a base cottage below, taking up to five, alongside boulder cottages and a family longhouse if you'd rather keep your feet nearer the ground. It runs on natural light and ventilation with rainwater harvesting and no air-con, so it's a hot, honest, off-grid sort of place rather than a polished one. Set expectations on the landscape too — this is dry-zone forest, not true rainforest. The forest walks and birding are good, and the Minneriya and Kaudulla elephant gatherings are within striking distance. Verdict: a characterful, eco-minded base for the cultural triangle, with a real treehouse at its heart.
