Tungog Rainforest Eco Camp

Tungog Rainforest Eco Camp is ten live-in observation platforms on stilts, built from local materials on the fringe of Tungog Lake, an oxbow off the river in a meander-belt forest of Borneo teak and strangler figs. It is owned and run by KOPEL Bhd, the cooperative formed by the people of Batu Puteh village in the late 1990s to protect the last fragments of forest in the lower river, and the money you pay goes back into their habitat-restoration work. The camp is off-grid, powered by LPG and solar, lit by gas lamps at night, with cooking and laundry done off site; there is no mobile signal, on purpose. Packages include river cruises, night walks, tree planting, meals and access to eighteen kilometres of trails, from RM 881 per person for three days and two nights and RM 1,322 for four days. The camp's own count is up to five hornbill species visiting daily, plus orangutans, civets and macaques. Twenty guests at most; two nights minimum is the sensible booking.
