Borneo Rainforest Lodge, Danum Valley
Danum Valley is the reference point for old Bornean rainforest, a conservation area of primary lowland dipterocarp forest with no settlement inside it, and Borneo Rainforest Lodge is the one place to sleep there. The lodge is operated by Borneo Nature Tours, a subsidiary of the Sabah Foundation, which has run it since 1996, and it is reached from the town of Lahad Datu by the lodge's own 4x4 transfer. Rooms come in four grades, from Jungle Chalets through Deluxe and Premium Deluxe Chalets to Premium Villas, with a Mandara spa on site and Swarovski optics for the birders. One thing to know before booking: the operator has posted that a new clubhouse and chalets are under construction between January 2025 and January 2027, with work during daytime hours, so ask which chalets sit furthest from the site. Rates and packages are published on the operator's site, not on Airbnb.
