Borneo Rainforest Lodge, Danum Valley

The usual route is a 55-minute flight from Kota Kinabalu to Lahad Datu, then about two and a half hours by road into the valley. The lodge sells full-board packages that include the guides and the return transfer between Lahad Datu and the lodge, so you are collected in town and brought back at the end. The Sabah Tourism Board puts the conservation area roughly 80 km from Lahad Datu.

There are 27 chalets and three villas, each with its own bathroom. The entry-level Jungle Chalet is 29 square meters with a queen and a single or two singles, air conditioning, a minibar, a safe, tea and coffee, and an electric insect repellent, with international 220 to 240V sockets. At the top end, the Premium Villas look onto the river and come with a plunge pool, an outdoor tub on the deck, trekking gear and two pairs of Swarovski binoculars. The single-storey villa is 103 square meters and sleeps two in a king; the two-storey villa is 179 square meters and sleeps four.

Days are built around guided time in the forest. The canopy walkway is 360 m long and 27 m above the ground; some sections are shut for now because dying trees could drop branches, but the rest stays open. Guides also lead jungle walks, a hike to the rock pool under Fairy Fall, rafting on the Danum River, and night outings on foot or in an electric buggy. Birders can look for more than fifty endemic species, the Bornean Bristlehead and White-crowned Hornbill among them, and the lodge advises a longer stay for serious birding. Meals mix Asian and Western dishes, indoors or out, from 7 to 9 am, noon to 2 pm and 7 to 9 pm.

The operator has scheduled building work on a new clubhouse and chalets from 1 January 2025 to 22 January 2027, with work hours of 8 am to 6 pm. The lodge first opened in 1994 and lists GSTC certification and a MOTAC green hotel rating, both running from 2024 to 2027.

The MyBIS register, Malaysia's government biodiversity database, classes Danum Valley as a Class I protection forest reserve of 43,892 hectares under the Sabah Forestry Department, with the forest concession held by the Sabah Foundation as the Danum Valley Conservation Area. The Sabah Tourism Board names banteng, clouded leopard, orangutan and Bornean pygmy elephant among its animals, along with a yellow meranti measured at 100.8 m, which it calls the world's tallest tropical tree.
