Pondside Bungalow at Sacha Urco Lodge
A tiny bungalow beside a pond at Sacha Urco Lodge, on 130 hectares of preserved cloud forest outside Mindo. The design is the unusual part: the host built it from materials collected in the forest and laid it out on Fibonacci proportions, which sounds precious until you sit on the deck and hear the birds. Reviews mention the birdsong before anything else. It sleeps two in one bed, has a kitchenette for simple cooking, Wi-Fi and a dedicated workspace, so it doubles as a remote-work hideout. Seven years of hosting, a five-star rating from its first seventeen guests. Mindo's restaurants and birding trails are a short drive.
The drive to Sacha Urco and what the bungalow has
The host's directions start in Mindo. Drive about five minutes along Calle Quito to the fork known as the Y de Cunuco, marked by a small white heron statue at the pedestrian entrance of the nuns' school, then follow the Cunuco road for 6.5 km. The road fords two streams. For most of the year an ordinary car gets through; from February to May the host suggests four-wheel drive, or leaving your car at the hostel just before the streams and renting a van there. About 500 m past the second stream, the San Antonio, cross the Mindo River bridge on the left and the Sacha Urco Reserve gate is right there.
Airbnb lists it as a tiny home for two, with one bedroom, one bed and one bathroom. Besides the kitchen and the workspace, it has its own hot tub and a fire pit, and pets are welcome. Check-in is self-service, and staff work on the property. The safety list includes smoke and carbon monoxide alarms, a fire extinguisher and a first aid kit. No smoking and no parties.
